The Challenge: Elevating Presentation Skills for a Veteran Sales Force

Pearson's Higher Education division needed to enhance the presentation and demonstration skills of its large, experienced sales force. The goal wasn't just a basic skills refresher; they sought a fundamental shift towards a more "people-centric, not product-centric" approach.

Julie Tylman, representing Pearson's Learning & Development team, was looking for a streamlined process that would make sales presentations more effective, personalized, and engaging—benefiting both the customers and the reps delivering them.

The Solution: A Scalable, Collaborative Training Partnership

What began as a targeted engagement—delivering intermediate-level presentation skills workshops for a few experienced edtech sales groups—grew significantly over 18 months based on positive results and team feedback.

I introduced my sales presentation process, a framework designed specifically to shift focus from product features to customer needs and outcomes. The program included:

  • On-Site Workshops: Interactive sessions focused on planning, developing, and delivering demos that drive sales forward.
  • 1:1 Demo Reviews: I provided personalized, in-depth coaching based on reviews of "pre-work" presentation assignments for marquee solutions and recorded demos from individual Learning Technology Specialists (LTS).
  • New Rep Training Integration: The success led Pearson to embed this training as a core component of their bi-annual "Rookie Sales Presentations" retreats, building my core frameworks for presentation structure and audience engagement directly into their new hire onboarding.

Throughout the multi-year engagement, I worked closely with Julie and Pearson's sales managers as a "trusted and generous collaborator," continuously tailoring the curriculum and delivery to meet their evolving needs.

The Outcome: Rave Reviews and Enterprise-Wide Adoption

The impact of the training was consistently validated by the sales team's enthusiasm, hard metrics, and the program's expansion.

  • Exceptional Team Feedback: In post-workshop surveys, the L&D team's threshold for "a big success" was an average rating of 4.0/5.0. Our sessions consistently cleared this, earning "worthwhile" ratings as high as 4.51 out of 5.0 and personal trainer ratings as high as 4.68 out of 5.0.
  • Core Concepts Adopted: The surveys proved the methodology stuck. Reps specifically cited the "Concept of 'Finish it First' (aka the ‘Pot Roast’)" and "Rumble Strips (how to capture and maintain buyer attention)" as their biggest takeaways.
  • Scaled Success: The initial pilot's success led Pearson to expand the training across their entire Higher Education sales force, demonstrating enterprise-wide value and adoption.
  • Enduring Partnership: My role evolved beyond a one-time trainer to that of a trusted L&D partner, continuously refining the program over several years to ensure long-term impact.
